CLE PapersLawyers are ethically bound to stay current with legal developments through continuing legal education (CLE). In some jurisdictions, CLE is mandatory. The papers presented at CLE seminars are usually a good source of practical legal research, often on important new cases or legislation or other practice developments.
The best way to find CLE papers is using the Canadian Legal Symposia Index (CLSI) on LexisNexis Quicklaw. This database indexes CLE papers from 1986 to current, although it tends to emphasize seminars from Ontario (which is understandable due to Ontario having the largest population of lawyers). However, CLSI is only an index containing information about the seminar with listing of all of the author/presenters and the titles of their papers – the full-text of the papers is not provided.
If you do not have access to the CLSI, you can consider the following options:
- As of June 2010, the Centre d'accès à l'information juridique (CAIJ) has made the Scott Index to Canadian Legal Periodicals freely available online (1998 to date). This database includes some seminar material.
- LSUC Great Library Catalog Search: The Great Library at the Law Society of Upper Canada has been cataloging the Table of Contents from CLE seminar binders for a number of years. Choose "Guided Keyword Search" and choose "Search in . . . Table of Contents" (see screenshot below) or click here to be brought to the "Table of Contents" search screen.

- Custom Google search of Canadian Law Firms, Law Blogs and Journal Articles: Lawyers who present CLE papers at seminars will sometimes make their papers available on their law firm's website. If so, searching on the foregoing link will include those papers in your search results.
- LSUC AccessCLE: The Law Society of Upper Canada has thousands of CLE papers presented at LSUC-sponsored seminars available on this site, from circa 2004 to current. Papers older than 18 months are freely available. For more recent papers, you will be able to read the articles for free but need to pay for them if you want to print or save them. Topics of papers cover Administrative Law, Business, Civil Litigation, Criminal, Employment/Labour, Environmental, Estates/Trusts, Family, Immigration, Insurance Law, Intellectual Property, Paralegals, Practice Management, and Real Estate.
- Bar association seminars: The Canadian Bar Association (CBA) has a page devoted to Professional Development that lists CBA programs and includes an online store to purchase selected CLE papers presented at CBA seminars. Likewise, the Ontario Bar Association (OBA) also has a Professional Development page that contains links to CLE papers presented at OBA seminars (although access is usually limited to OBA members).
- CLEBC Online: This is an extensive database of PDF copies of all CLE papers presented from 2001 to current at seminars sponsored by the Continuing Legal Education Society of British Columbia (subscription required). Click here for a listing by topic of all papers.
- LESA (Legal Education Society of Alberta): LESA has an online store containing recent CLE seminar papers on a variety of law-related topics of interest to Alberta lawyers.
- Other CLE providers: There are a number of other "private sector" or bar-affiliated providers of CLE seminars whose websites listed below may provide information about CLE papers:
